Welcome to the City Lights Blog!

Whew, yes, we’re here, we finally made it!!

It’s true, we’re arriving kind of late to the big, fab blog party. Well, maybe we spent a little too much time gazing at the invite, but it was so much fun just to think about all the folks who’d be there…. And then it took a while to figure out what to bring for the potluck, since we heard about what some other folks were bringing and we knew we couldn’t just show up with a bag of chips or something…. And then, of course there was the usual conundrum of what to wear, you know that always takes a while…. So yeah, we’re late to the party. But now that we’re here, we’re thinking maybe that’s just fine, after all?

I mean, maybe it’s good to show up after things have already settled into a groove, when everyone’s already hugged their old friends and gotten introduced to some new faces, folks have already had a couple of drinks and a bunch of over-stimulated party conversation, and now the room is packed and buzzing, and someone has turned the music up for dancing while a few people are trying to squeeze their way back for round two at the food table as latecomers continue to arrive with yummy new offerings, and really, now that we’re finally here, we’re thinking that maybe after all this is just right indeed, since what could be better than slipping into the warm, easy welcome of a party in progress?

Well, I’m really so glad we made it at last! Really glad you’re here, too, and I hope you’re planning to stick around for a while? As for what’s new, what’s been happening, what plans for the future, well, that’s a whole lot to get started talking about so quickly, I mean, we just got here, and we’d have to find a quiet place to sit down a while. Maybe we can just dive right in with some bits and pieces, anecdotes and sketches and that sort of thing? I mean, you’ll get the idea, won’t you? C’mon, let’s make our way across the room, I could use a glass of something, and if you’re still with me by the time we get there, I promise I’ll make better sentences later on if you still want to hear ’em. But hey, let’s dance while the music is playing. It’s so nice to be here with all of our friends! Though of course I don’t know everyone here, but they’re all friends of friends, and that’s always a good place to start, don’t you think, and anyway it’s like Lawrence Ferlinghetti says, “Fuck Art, Let’s Dance!” So let’s go!

It would be great to have Susan Daitch contribute to your compilation of words. I picked up, at random, her “Paper Conspiracies,” which you published, during one of my all too infrequent visits to City Lights Books on New Year’s Day (one celebrates as one can). I started reading it during one of my all too infrequent visits to Vesuvio’s across the alley, and stuck with it, in deep appreciation and admiration, until it, unfortunately, ended.
